When I heard about the Second Glass Wine Riot, I wasn’t totally sure what to expect. A convention-type room packed with vendors offering tastings of 250 wines from all over the world sounded intimidating, especially for someone like me who enjoys wine but also gives nicknames to favorites like Sauv Blanc (Sauvignon Blanc) and Cab Sauv (Cabernet Sauvignon). I managed to convince my friend and fellow Eat With Me contributor Keiko to join me in this wine-laden journey, and so we wine-novices purchased our $60 tickets, headed to downtown Boston and entered the Castle of Wine.

The social aspect of living in and around Boston is often defined by where the T (subway) stops; main hubs like Porter Square, Harvard Square, and Davis Square get the lion’s share of the traffic and attention. But the smaller squares in between, like Union Square in Somerville, also have their own set of charms.

This past weekend, my roommates and I made way too much spaghetti for a house dinner (about 3 pounds) and have been trying to find ways to make new dishes so it won’t go to waste. I also had some broccoli and veggie sausage that needed to be eaten, so tonight I made a very simple, delicious meal of roast broccoli, (veggie) sausage, and the leftover whole wheat pasta. I remembered a more complicated, but equally satisfying meal from House Beautiful Magazine that included shrimp instead of sausage; I simplified the recipe and was able to make it in less than 30 minutes with ingredients I had on hand. Red wine with the pasta and strawberries with Nutella for dessert made for a serious food heaven/coma and I highly recommend that combo.

A small party of burger-lovers, two meat eaters and two vegetarians, trekked from Cambridge to Downtown Crossing in search of Kingston Station, a French-inspired bistro. The Station burger came recommended to us by a friend, claiming it could be the burger we’ve been looking for.

One of the most delicious things to happen in my home this horribly long Boston winter was Chili Monday. After trying a recipe for Sweet Potato Black Bean Chili for one roommate’s birthday, my roommates and I decided to make the chili again on a 15-degree night in January. The heat from the chili warmed us all up and has now become our favorite house tradition. We have tried other chili recipes, but this one seems to be the our favorite.

It’s all about the cilantro. Or maybe it’s the daikon. Or the crispy-crunchy-soft-all-at-once french baguette. Whatever it is, I cannot believe I’ve gone through four years steps away from this place and didn’t know about their $3 banh mis until this month. The banh mi, for those of you who have yet to discover their magic, is possibly the only good thing to come out of colonialism.

A group of five burger lovers descended upon 5 Napkin Burger on its opening night at the Prudential Center this past March. We’d heard good things about the other locations in New York, and hey, this place has burger in the name— it must be a good burger. Admittedly, we are always a little skeptical of a burger that runs for $10, and that is without fries.

As the unofficial beer and bread correspondent of EatWithMe, I plan my posts to exhibit my modest baking skills, gush annoyingly about products I love, and make wry observations on all things yeasty. For this post, I’m taking a deep breath as we enter the 2010 holiday season, and thinking about what I’m truly thankful for. Oh sure, there’s the usual: family, friends, books I love, my happy life, blah blah blah. And then there’s beer.
