Getting by as a vegetarian in a family full of avid meat-eaters can be quite the struggle. This past December, I decided to remove meat from my diet, and I haven’t looked back since. Given the plethora of meal options at Emerson College, this diet was comfortingly manageable, but now that I’m home for the summer, I oftentimes find myself scrounging for food come dinner time. While the rest of my family enjoys grilled chicken breast or steak, I’m stuck with the side dishes: potatoes and a green salad. I’m not complaining, but every once in awhile it would be nice to enjoy a nice, hearty, vegetarian meal as a family— one that we can all eat and enjoy.

A 40-foot killer wave may be somewhat of a monster blessing for surfers on the west coast, but take that wave and move it 3,000 miles east to Boston’s North End and you’ve got a whole other monster. This year marks the 92nd anniversary of the Great Boston Molasses Flood, which resulted in 21 deaths and 150 injuries. Back in 1919, a fifty-foot steel storage tank kept watch over Boston’s North End waterfront at 529 Commercial Street. The tank held molasses that was to be distilled into industrial alcohol for World War I. Tragically, on January 15th, this massive storage tank burst at its seams, sending over 2.3 million gallons of rapidly moving molasses through the surrounding area. The 40-foot wave destroyed everything in its path: elevated railways, buildings, neighborhoods, and, inevitably, frantic Bostonians and tourists.

A couple of weeks ago a friend and I attended a demonstration and informal discussion on seasonal foods from the Puglia region of Italy, “Primavera in Puglia,” hosted by Rosella Rago of the web cooking show Cooking With Nonna, and her real-life Nonna Romano, a true kitchen warrior.

Springtime in Cambridge is a wonderful thing. The leaves are almost shiny and green, the water seems to turn a velvety dark blue…and the Harvard kids become less obnoxious and actually move out of the way. And walking along listening to music seems to make the whole world shimmer. Not merely from heat waves, either. Plus, there are now several food trucks in Kendall Square worthy of a sample – and what better time to dine outside than in the spring?

Last Saturday I attended my second Second Glass event, Muscadet, Shuck Yeah! I had high hopes after my experience at the Boston Wine Riot in April, and I wasn’t disappointed. This event had a different vibe from the Wine Riot, partly because of the venue change from a hotel convention hall lined with booth after booth of vino variations, to a fairytale-esqe split-level castle, complete with a dance floor that was lit by floating lanterns and a flashy drunktopus ice sculpture.

A gluten-free pasta dish that will make your mouth water. Linguine with Broccoli Rabe, Caramelized Onions and Sausage is a fabulous weeknight meal. This gluten-free dish takes time to prepare but is worth the wait. The garlicky greens paired with the sweet Italian sausage and caramelized onions has a delicious, dynamic flavor.

We’ve been eating a lot of incredible food lately. By we, I mostly mean me, but most of the Eat With Me staff would agree that this spring has brought some great meals. Check out these photos for some dinner inspiration or just some drool time.

Sometimes, just spotting a single promo poster for a concert can make you get all gooey and nostalgic. And remind you of “home.” Or conjure up memories that best relate to how you perceived home as a kid. Because England and America are so very, very different, music tends to act as a bridge between the two – it’s hardly like I can wander around here and pick up some of the food that I used to enjoy in England (a good pasty, chips, fish…). So when I saw that Jamie Oliver Tweeted about The Big Feastival which will take place this summer on Clapham Common in London, and that The Charlatans were headlining, I went all 1995 again. Just for a second.

How spicy do you like your nuts? I like mine medium spicy—just a little bit of heat to excite the taste buds, but not so hot that the other components get covered up by the fire. Speaking of the other components, this is a great recipe to use up all those random spices you have so much of. That’s right my friends, now you can be sure that you will outlive your dry goods and not the other way around.

When I see some bananas covered in brown spots, I don’t think “ewwww.” I see an opportunity. My mom has the same motivation and always makes the most delicious banana bread. This weekend, celebrate this beautiful Boston weather and Mother’s Day with some delicious banana bread from scratch!
I didn’t have a recipe for banana bread on hand— that’s a lie, I just like making up my own recipes— so I looked online for an easy recipe. I found one that got mixed reviews on AllRecipes.com and made up my own recipe from the base of that one. Am I a baking nerd? Perhaps, but it has delicious results.

Located at 685 Washington Street in Chinatown, Penang is an affordably delicious dining experience with an array of Malaysian appetizers, entrees, and desserts. Although Malaysian cuisine is oftentimes outshined in America by the more popular menus of China and Japan, it is certainly an eating opportunity that should not be overlooked for Boston residents. Penang’s dishes are perhaps best described as a best-of-both-worlds fusion of Chinese and Indian cultures, and, as you can imagine, the results are astounding.

This can hardly be a real burger review since the Burger Tours group has eaten at Mr. Bartley’s in Harvard several times over the years, and it has made a little place in our hearts not because it’s the best burger, but because it’s consistently just what we want. Mr. Bartley’s is moving on to its third generation of ownership, and hopefully it will continue on. If you haven’t been here yet, you either don’t live here or you’re seriously missing out on a Cambridge classic.

Heading out to Brigham Circle in February for burgers was quite a trip for eight mostly Cambridge-dwelling burger lovers, but Burger Tours is about the burger and we will go great lengths to try a promising burger. The Savant Project intrigued us because of it’s locavore practices (like using Iggy’s Bread, a Cambridge bakery), and mixed reviews on Yelp. Plus we had a Groupon, so away we ordered.
