Voodoo Doughnut Helps Keep Portland Weird

DSC03173.jpg

They looked skeptically at me. “Matt, we’re really going to wait in this line?”

We were standing outside Portland, Oregon’s original Voodoo Doughnut Shop (there are two now), located right near the city’s waterfront park on Southwest 3rd Avenue. And, of course, the answer to their question was “yes.” Maybe I’m a little too quick to pat myself on the back, but I have experience with high traffic food venues (a frequenter of New York’s Shake Shack) and I know persistence pays.

Before I go any further, I ask Eat With Me’s  health-conscious readership to suspend their discriminating tastes and get pumped about Voodoo Doughnut Shop. No matter how fatty and sugary it is, food that reaches the viral/buzz cred that Voodoo Doughnut has should be appreciated. The happy, hungry group of people waiting to get into the shop are there for a reason. People visit Portland to visit Voodoo. Some even plan  weddings at Voodoo. The donuts are newsworthy and available 24-hours a day. I mean, check ‘em out:

Have you heard of Slow Money?

There’s a lot of great work being done to support food producers, especially those that are committed to environmental sustainability and nutrition. Slow Money, an organization founded by Woody Tasch, was established to direct more of our dollars to food, farms, and soil fertility. Check out these videos for more information. If they interest you, attend Slow Money’s National Gathering! Eat With Me will probably be in attendance!

Dumplings!

A sampling of the final product

If you’re single or you were looking for something else to celebrate this past Valentine’s Day, did you remember to ring in the Chinese New Year? (It’s possible to do both – I went to a Valentine’s Day dim sum brunch at Chinatown Brasserie near Washington Square, NYC, where they were also celebrating the New Year!)

If you did celebrate, that’s great, but the holiday has another name, 春節 or the Spring Festival, which is a bit of a misnomer during February in the Northeastern United States.

Yesterday, with things fully thawed out, my former college adviser and her husband – residents of New Haven, CT – opened up their house for a belated Chinese New Year’s party to celebrate the true arrival of spring. Invited are friends, family, neighbors, students, co-workers, and anyone else who smells the alluring scent of over six hundred, 6-0-0 (yes, that’s right), homemade dumplings, cooked on electric skillets outside the house.

Taste Test. Brad’s Raw Chips

DSC02872.jpg

Eat With Me was lucky enough to receive two test packages of Brad’s Raw Chips in the kale and red bell pepper varieties. Check them out at Brad’s website or on Facebook.

If you happened to read my post on the sustainable living blog Practically Green that included a recipe for kale chips, but you don’t have time to make them for yourself, check these out! These are definitely a different beast, but kale proves itself delicious in yet another way.

Always on the lookout for healthy snacks to replace mass-produced corn tortilla chips and other addictive foods, I was excited to give these chips a try. Before tearing open the packages, I read the information pamphlet that accompanied the product. Here’s what they had to say:

What is a raw chip?

Brad’s Raw Chips are made in Bucks County, Pennsylvania using locally grown organic produce whenever possible. Brad’s Raw Chips are gluten-free and made from a combination of sprouted seeds and vegetables. Sprouting the seeds deactivates the enzyme inhibitors, thereby raising the levels of enzymes and nutrients that our bodies can digest. Spices are added to each variety to further enhance taste. All ingredients are blended together and the mixture is dehydrated at 115 degrees to ensure that the enzymes and nutrients are preserved. Enzymes are important because they aid in digestion and absorption of food. The result is a crunch, healthy, and flavorful chip that not only tastes great but is great for you! Try some of Brad’s Raw Chips today and put the crunch back into healthy eating.
