It’s a happy time of year when the grocery stores start selling two pounds of strawberries for the price of one. Strawberries are so delicious, and here in the Northeast, they’re a great harbinger of spring after our seemingly endless winters. I love them because four out of five of the members of my household eat them, which is a better success rate than virtually any other fruit or vegetable.

I moved out of New York City seven years ago, and I still can’t get it out of my system. I miss the constant thrum of energy, the fashion, the parks, the subway, and naturally, I miss the food. My time in New York introduced me to Thai and Afghan cuisine and made me a devotee of sushi and Cuban sandwiches. These I miss. But there’s a humble little treat that inspires my deepest reveries of New York food: the fig bar.

I adore eggplant, but I understand that it’s a bit of an acquired taste. In my recent quest to introduce it to my children, I probably should have stuck to eggplant parmigiana. Because really, what doesn’t taste great covered in tomato sauce and melted cheese?

I’m not a vegetarian, but I do love a good meatless meal a few times a week. Alas, I’m the only person in my household who feels that way, so I often experiment with vegetarian entrees when my husband is traveling or, say, at a National League playoff game. (Go Phils!)

We suburban parents are quick to embrace the rituals of modern parenthood. We do yoga with our infants, we buy strollers fit to handle any terrain, and as soon as our kids are old enough, we sign them up for sports. We buy tiny cleats, perhaps a lawn chair for watching games from the sidelines. And we sign up to be “snack mom.”
