Olive-Cream Cheese Sandwich

Every cook has one.  A weird vestige of childhood nourishment.  A culinary aberration both strange and satisfying.  Mine still haunts me late at night, after a night working at the restaurant.  The timeless after-school sandwich: smooth cream cheese, crisp romaine lettuce, savory green olives, tucked lovingly between two slices of nutty whole grain toast.  My mother stands in our kitchen, slanty sunshine streaming in through the window over the kitchen sink.  Late afternoon suspended in each particle of dust that hovers in the warm southwesterly light.  Can I make you a sandwich?  No need to specify which, it’s already written: the recipe of a blissful childhood.
